Tires are specifically designed fit only a certain wheel rim and to match the engineering requirements of your vehicle. The wrong tire size can be unsafe, unreliable and perform poorly.
The size of a tire can always be found on its sidewall. It consists of a string of information including the tire’s service type, section width, sidewall aspect ratio, wheel/tire diameter, load index and speed rating. We will use the following tire size as an example:
P225/60R16 89H
The "P" in the tire size stands for a P-metric tire. This is a designation generally given to tires for passenger vehicles which includes cars, minivans, SUVs and light duty pick-up trucks. Other values are "LT" for light truck sizes or blank for Eurometric sizes.
The "225" is the width of the tire (in mm) from the widest point of its outer sidewall to the widest point of its inner sidewall. This is also known as Section Width.
The "60" refers to the height of the tire’s sidewall as a percentage of the section width. For this particular tire size example, the sidewall from rim to tread is 60% of 225mm. This number is also referred to as the Aspect Ratio in the industry.
The "R" in this case refers to the radial construction of the tire. This is a holdover from the days of bias ply tires.
The "16" indicates the diameter of the rim, in inches. Rim size is another term for this number. It is mandatory that the tire and wheel diameters match before a tire can be mounted on the wheel.
The "89" refers to the Load Index or the load carrying capacity of the tire. In this example, the 89 reflects the tire’s ability to carry 1, 279 pounds. It is recommended that the tires you purchase have the same or higher load index as the Original Equipment (factory installed) tire on your vehicle.
The "H" identifies the Speed Rating of the tire. It reflects the top speed capability of a tire and in this case it indicates that this tire’s top speed is 130 mph. While few go this fast, it is also a measure of sidewall stiffness – higher speed ratings deliver tighter cornering and better braking/acceleration and a sportier road-feel.
